An Annual Affair
Fresh ideas abound at an old-time greenhouse
When the owners first saw their future greenhouse 22 years ago, dead carnations sent a forlorn greeting inside the rambling commercial building. Extensive renovations and years of hard work gave the 1910 structure new life. Today, topiaries and tropical plants, all for sale, fill The Old Greenhouse, while three and a half acres of surrounding annual gardens show visitors imaginative ways to use the petunias, pansies, and other bedding plants in which the greenhouse specializes.
Junipers styled by the husband convey the relaxed formality for which The Old Greenhouse is known. “Bedding-out” schemes dominated the landscape during
