Rose Fever : A professional grower shares his favorites
When househunting, some people take along a measuring tape to check out available wall space. Twenty-one years ago, when Mike Lowe and his family searched for a new home in Nashua, N.H., Mike carried his spade. “I couldn’t move to a place where the soil wasn’t right,” he recalls. On the Zone 5 lot the Lowes eventually purchased, Mike’s spade sank into the soil without effort, thanks to a 20-inch layer of rich loam, a legacy of farmers who had once worked the land. Without a doubt, Mike knows his priorities: to grow and breed the best roses possible.
Endless Summer
A Denver designer shows how to bring the outdoors in
For many gardeners, a seasonal interest in flowers can quickly become a year-round passion. To surround herself with summertime beauty 12 months of the year, Carol Davis transformed a run-down Victorian-era bungalow in Denver’s Cherry Creek North neighborhood into a charming cottage for all seasons. Elements borrowed from the garden that fill the diminutive dwelling with flair include exuberant color (applied to walls with natural sea sponges or wadded-up plastic bags), fresh window treatments (even antique gates and floral sprays frame the view), and plenty of container-grown plants and flowers. Carol sees no reason why outdoor furniture must be reserved for patios and lawns, so weathered settees and fanciful chairs enjoy an honored place inside the house as well. Since 1994 Carol’s home has also been her business: Summerhouse, Ltd., specializes in vintage furniture, statuary, benches, gifts, and home furnishings, all of it inspired by the garden. These treasures and Carol’s clever container plantings may be seen in every room in the house.
A Vineyard Haven
A peek at the garden that inspires Susan Branch’s artistry
Susan Branch lives in a world straight from the pages of her seven irresistible books, beloved for their hand-lettered recipes, helpful hints, and illustrated aphorisms. Inspiration comes from the many happy times she enjoys with family and friends, and from the Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., home she shares with restaurateur Joe Hall and the couple’s three cats. A charming vegetable garden, Fourth of July parties on the lawn, and picnics at the beach have all been captured in watercolor. “I didn’t know I could paint until I was 30 and received a gift certificate to an art store, where I bought my first watercolors,” the California native reveals.
A Scholar’s Garden
Classic Chinese design comes to America
More than a thousand years ago, as Europe struggled through the Dark Ages, China enjoyed an era of unparalleled artistic, intellectual, and social advancement. In accordance with Confucian principles, only the brightest men were deemed fit to govern; a grueling battery of examinations determined who, exactly, would rule the land with the blessing of the Emperor. The most lucrative government posts went to students who scored the highest.
