a8soap50You know, I am always teaching you to keep your hands dirty? Well, how about I tell you how to get your hands clean with herbs from the garden? We are making soaps today on Rebecca’s Garden, and don’t worry, it’s not the hard way. It’s the easy way of making soap. All you need is a couple of materials from home and herbs from the garden.

This is a great project for the fall! I’ve already started thinking about the holidays, and haven’t yet started buying gifts. I’m definitely giving these beautiful and fragrant soaps this season.

images2Why spend a lot of money on gift-wrap when you can get great looks using materials from your house. It’s a great way to reduce, re-use, and recycle.

Cut out enough paper from a grocery bag to wrap your present in. Wrap it up and finish it off with a handful of raffia, which will make a nice little bow around the center.

Having fresh flowers is one thing, but what do you do with them when they start dying? I’ve got a great tip that I learned from the head gardener at Snow village Inn in New Hampshire. Go ahead and let the flowers die back naturally, throw them in a basket, and when the occasion calls for some instant potpourri, all you need to do is crumble up the flower petals, arrange them in a dish like I’ve done here, then stop at your co-op store and pick up what’s called essential oil. You can get them in a wide variety of fragrance. Simply add 10 drops to the petals and you have a potpourri that not only looks good, it smells terrific.

19moss10I just love the look of aged pots and sculpture, especially the type found in historical gardens that are covered with moss and lichens. If you want to have this look in your garden, you will have to wait a long time, unless you prematurely age your pots.

Indoor Fountains

19foun00 Indoor water fountains have been flooding the market the last couple of years and I wanted one. The only problem was I couldn’t find a fountain that fit my personality, nor did I want to spend $150 to $300! I decided to make one and I’ll show you how. I’ve come up with a simple technique for indoor fountains that will cost you under $40.

Special thanks to my friend, Peggy Pribil of Morning Glory Studio. She can be reached at 715-386-6834. Thanks, Peggy.

imagesYou know how much I love to grow flowers. I also enjoy pressing them, as well, but let’s face it — sometimes pressing can be a long, tedious process. Well, not any longer. I have a very simple technique that will press flowers in literally minutes.

You need to start with fresh flowers, I’ll try these delphiniums. First place them onto a microwaveable plate. Before you lay them down, make sure you add a couple of layers of either napkins, newspapers, or some kind of blotting paper.
